Scutellaria barbata is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. Other names include ban zhi lian (Chinese: 半枝莲; pinyin: bànzhīlián), scullcap or skullcap, barbat skullcap, skute barbata, or herba scutellariae barbatae.

Extracts

An extract of Scutellaria barbata called BZL101 containing the antioxidant flavonoid scutellarin, has been shown to induce apoptosis of ovarian and breast tumor cells in vitro.[1]

Traditional uses

Scutellaria barbata is used in some traditional herbal sleeping remedies and for anxiety, migraines, and depression.[2]

Bionovo is testing its use as a treatment for advanced breast cancer and pancreatic cancer.
